Good summaries start with good input
Summaries are only as accurate as the source. For research or study, verify important details against the original — summarizers can omit nuance.
Choosing a summary format
Short paragraph gives a quick gist in a few sentences — useful for deciding whether something is worth reading. Medium paragraph adds the main supporting points. Key points returns a scannable list, ideal for study notes and meeting recaps. Detailed keeps more sentences for reports and research you need to understand well.
The summarizer is extractive: it scores each sentence by how many of the text's key terms it contains and where it appears, skips sentences that repeat one already chosen, then keeps the strongest sentences in their original order. It needs at least four sentences. It does not invent wording, so every sentence in the summary comes from your text.
How to summarize for study
Read the original once, then generate key points and compare them with your own notes. Anything the summary includes that you missed is worth rereading; anything you noted that the summary left out may be a detail your teacher cares about.
Rewrite the summary in your own words before using it in an assignment, and cite the original source. A summary is a study aid, not a replacement for reading.
Limits to keep in mind
Extracted sentences can lose context — a “this” or “however” may refer to a sentence that was left out — and the main argument can be missed when a text is long or loosely structured. For decisions that matter, check the key points against the original.
