What makes an essay read as AI-written
A restated prompt as the thesis, symmetrical body paragraphs, broad claims without sources, and a conclusion that begins “In conclusion” and summarizes everything again.
College application essays
Admissions readers look for a specific, personal story. Generic reflection is the strongest AI signal in personal statements — and the weakest writing, too.
Essay types and what to watch for
Argumentative essays written by AI often present “both sides” evenly and avoid a firm conclusion. Narrative essays tend to lack sensory, specific detail and real dialogue. Expository essays may define terms broadly and list points without connecting them. Personal statements often fall back on generic lessons such as “this experience taught me the value of hard work.”
Strengthening a flagged essay
Replace general claims with evidence: a quote from the text, a statistic with its source, a specific moment you experienced. Rewrite the thesis so it takes a position someone could disagree with. Cut summary sentences that repeat what the paragraph already said. Read the essay aloud and change anything that does not sound like you.
How to read the result
Look at where the flagged sentences are. Flags clustered in the introduction and conclusion are common even in human essays, because those sections follow familiar formulas. Flags spread evenly through every paragraph are a stronger pattern. Either way, use the confidence level and the stated reasons, not the percentage alone.
Understanding the limits
No AI detector is 100% accurate. Results are probabilistic estimates and should never be used as the only evidence that someone used AI. Treat them as one signal alongside drafts, revision history, and a conversation with the writer.
