How to Rewrite a Sentence: 10 Techniques with Before-and-After Examples

By AIDetector365 Editorial Team · 11 min read · Published · Updated

Almost every writer has a sentence they have rewritten five times and still dislike. Rewriting is a craft with a small set of reliable moves: cut what's empty, move what matters to the front, choose stronger verbs and match the register to the reader.

Here are ten techniques with before-and-after examples. When you want quick options, our free sentence rewriter generates up to four alternatives and labels what each one changed.

Key takeaways

  • Most weak sentences are wordy, abstract or built around a weak verb.
  • Put the subject and the action close together and near the start.
  • Cut filler words and redundant phrases first; it fixes half the problems.
  • Vary sentence length so the important sentences stand out.
  • Generate options, then choose by reading aloud — you are the final editor.

10 sentence rewriting techniques

1. Cut wordy phrases

Before: “Due to the fact that the meeting was delayed, we were not able to finish on time.” After: “Because the meeting was delayed, we could not finish on time.”

2. Replace weak verbs with strong ones

Before: “She made a decision to make changes to the plan.” After: “She decided to change the plan.”

3. Turn nouns back into verbs

Before: “The implementation of the policy resulted in a reduction of costs.” After: “Implementing the policy reduced costs.”

4. Prefer the active voice

Before: “Mistakes were made by the team.” After: “The team made mistakes.” Passive voice is fine when the actor is unknown or unimportant.

5. Lead with the point

Before: “After reviewing all of the data from the last three quarters, we believe prices should rise.” After: “Prices should rise, based on data from the last three quarters.”

6. Move the reason or condition to the front

Before: “We postponed the launch because testing found two critical bugs.” After: “Because testing found two critical bugs, we postponed the launch.” Useful for emphasis and variety.

7. Split long sentences

Before: “The report was finished late, and it was missing two sections, so the client asked for a revision.” After: “The report was late and missing two sections. The client asked for a revision.”

8. Remove filler words

“Very,” “really,” “basically,” “actually” and “quite” rarely add meaning. “It is really very important” becomes “It is essential.”

9. Replace jargon and clichés

Before: “We need to leverage synergies to move the needle.” After: “We need to work together to improve results.”

10. Adjust the register

Casual: “We can't make it Friday.” Formal: “We are unable to attend on Friday.” Choose based on the reader, not on what sounds impressive.

How to use a sentence rewriter

If a sentence is already concise and plain, the tool may return no alternatives — and it tells you so instead of inventing a worse version. That is usually a sign the sentence is fine.

  1. Paste one sentence or a short passage into the sentence rewriter.
  2. Click Rewrite to get up to four alternatives: more concise, plainer, more formal, restructured, reworded or split.
  3. Read each note to understand what changed.
  4. Pick the version that fits, or combine parts of several.
  5. Read the full paragraph aloud to check the new sentence fits its neighbors.

Rewriting vs. paraphrasing

Rewriting improves your own sentence: clearer, shorter, better suited to the reader. Paraphrasing restates someone else's idea in your own words and requires a citation. For longer passages, the AI paraphraser offers modes such as Simple and Formal; for sources, read How to paraphrase.

A final check for every rewritten sentence

  • Does it still say exactly what you meant?
  • Is the most important word near the start or the end, where readers notice it?
  • Could you remove any word without losing meaning?
  • Does it fit the tone of the sentences around it?
  • Is it grammatically correct? Run it through the grammar checker.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rewrite a sentence without changing its meaning?

Change structure and word choice while keeping the same subject, action and facts. Compare with the original before you finalize.

What is the best free sentence rewriter?

Look for one that shows several alternatives, explains what changed and does not store your text. AIDetector365's rewriter runs in your browser and is free.

Why did the rewriter return no alternatives?

Because it found nothing wordy, formal or reorderable to change. Rather than produce a worse version, it tells you the sentence is already concise.

Can I rewrite a whole paragraph?

Yes, but the rewriter works best on a sentence or short passage. For longer text, use the AI paraphraser.
